AR Coatings - Are they any good?

Greetings! 

I had an email enquiring about the usefulness of watch glasses with AR (anti-reflective) coatings and which colours are best. So, here’s my view:

I’m not Aldo Kane and don’t need everything to be anti-reflective so as not to give away my sniping position. Nor have I ever (in my 53 years to date) looked at my watch and been unable to read the time due to sun glare or otherwise heard myself saying ‘good grief, that’s difficult to see, I might pop down to a jewellers and see if I can get some sort of anti reflective treatment for my watch’. 

Accordingly, I think that AR coatings are decorative rather than functional (they might well be functional for other people, but I’ve not had my epiphany yet). But they really are very, very decorative. There is, in fact, not very much that’s cooler than the coloured tint of an AR coating visibly catching the sunshine and glinting away for all to see - it adds mystery and quality as well as consolidation to a colour-scheme for a build. Personally, I love AR coatings and wish that there were more options on Ali to buy them pre-fitted. 

Obviously I would never buy a clear AR as that would be pointless in the context of my views above, but the blue and red ARs are ace and really add an extra level to a mod build (and particularly on a stealth build when the key tint under the black is red or blue). 

I’d like to see a few more glass tint colours whether they are actually AR functional or not. I have bought the Milgauss style cases with green tinted glass and think they look awesome, but I’ve not been able to get hold of green glass individually and put it into another case yet - so come on Ali sellers, let’s have you on this! 

The glass case supplier identified in my previous blog ‘Ali Express - Good or bad’ sells cases that are pre-fitted with blue or red AR coated glass, so if you don’t have a glass press (and I’ll maybe write a blog on those soon - i.e. which ones are good / bad), then they are a great place to start your AR journey. And the same store does of course do the individual glass if you are going to give it a go fitting them yourself.
